Backpacking can be one of the best ways to see the
wilderness and to experience the backcountry in ways the casual camper cannot.
The following are good backpacking tips for beginners and good reminders for
the experienced:
Plan ahead.
A
majority of backpacking accidents and deaths are a result of poor planning.
Decide on a proper route for the trip and stick to it. Also, give a friend or
family member back at home a copy of your plan in case you become lost.
Pack accordingly.
Stay current on what weather conditions
should be like leading up to the trip and pack the proper gear. Although you
want to pack as light as possible, it is a good idea to plan for worse weather
when you are in doubt.
Pack lightly.
Because
you are literally carrying everything you’re bringing on the trip, pack as
lightly as possible. The weight adds up quickly, so don’t bring unnecessary luxuries
(i.e. large binoculars) and consider purchasing a lightweight sleeping bag,
even if it costs a little bit more than a heavier one.
Go with a group.
There
are many backpacking and adventuring groups/clubs around the country and
traveling with them can be smart. These groups/clubs can teach you some new
things and are a much safer way to travel.
Pack good food.
You
will burn quite a few calories hiking around, so bringing healthy and
energizing food is best.
Pack out what you
pack in.
Always.
